About Madinah Cats

Working Together for a Better Future for Stray Cats
My name is Shazia and I live in the Netherlands. During a visit to Saudi Arabia, I fell in love with the beautiful stray cats of Makkah and Madinah. That trip transformed my life and made Saudi Arabia my favorite place on earth.
It all began in 2022 when I came across a motherless, malnourished kitten near the Pullman Zamzam Hotel in Madinah. I wanted to save him but the kitten was frightened and ran away. Heartbroken, I went to the hotel reception in tears, pleading for help. I asked if there was an animal ambulance or any way to rescue the kitten. They told me such services didn’t exist and assured me that security would search for it. Sadly, the kitten was never found and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
When I traveled to Makkah, I prayed to God for help, not just for that kitten but for all the stray cats in Makkah and Madinah.
In 2023, I returned to Madinah. I spent hours feeding and caring for stray cats and that’s when I found another motherless kitten. I instantly fell in love with it. This tiny, vulnerable life reignited my determination to make a difference. I tried everything to save it, reaching out to countless people for help, but no one could assist me. Heartbroken, I had to leave the kitten behind near Gate 338 of Masjid Al Nabawi.
Back in the Netherlands, I couldn’t stop crying. I cried for months and searched for ways to find that kitten. I contacted two well-known influencers in Saudi Arabia who kindly returned to Gate 338 to search for the kitten. I sent a detailed map of the kittens last known location and shared pictures of his unique fur markings. One influencer shared video footage of their search and the other conducted a live session with me. Despite their generous efforts, the kitten was never found.
Though I was deeply grateful, the sadness of losing that kitten never left me. I prayed daily, asking God to reunite me with the kitten one day. Even now, I look at the his pictures, memorizing the distinct fur pattern in hopes of recognizing the grown up version of this kitten, if I ever see him again in Madinah.
During this time, I discovered countless online stories from people who had witnessed the struggles of stray cats in Makkah and Madinah. These stories mirrored my own pain and inspired me to take action.
This is how Madinah Cats was born, a foundation dedicated to raising awareness about the suffering of stray cats who have no voice. But awareness wasn’t enough. These cats needed immediate care, safe spaces and long-term solutions.
With this realization, I built a dedicated team in Saudi Arabia, with Hajar as our incredible rescuer in Madinah. In the Netherlands, I recruited two wonderful board members, Wim and Loes, to strengthen the foundation. Our rescue efforts have since expanded to other cities. Sayem, our rescuer in Riyadh, has been instrumental in saving lives, while our foster caregivers, Khadijah in Riyadh and Mary in Jeddah, nurture rescued cats back to health. Michelle in Jeddah plays a crucial role in coordinating efforts to send these cats abroad, where they can find loving homes.
I am deeply grateful to the countless pilgrims who have supported our mission by rescuing cats and taking them to veterinary clinics. Their compassion and generosity have been invaluable and I proudly consider them part of the Madinah Cats team.
I am equally thankful for the unconditional support from our followers on social media. Your donations and encouragement make all this possible. You too, are a vital part of the Madinah Cats family.
Together, we work tirelessly to improve the lives of stray cats. Many of these animals are sick, injured or unneutered, left to fend for themselves in heartbreaking conditions. Witnessing their suffering strengthens our resolve to provide them with safe, loving environments and a better future.
Our ultimate dream is to establish shelters in both Makkah and Madinah, offering these cats a sanctuary where they can heal and thrive. We also aim to collaborate with veterinarians to implement TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs, a humane way to control the stray cat population and improve their overall quality of life.
Together, we can make a difference. Let’s unite to give these cats the compassion and care they so desperately need. Your support is invaluable to our mission. Thank you for standing with Madinah Cats and helping us create a brighter future for these beautiful souls.

The kitten that I wanted to help

I found him all alone without his mother

This is the place near gate 338 where I had to leave him and return to the Netherlands. If you look closely you see him.

Remembering the unique pattern of his fur so I can recognize him if I ever see him again in Madinah
Madinah
Madinah, also known as Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah (The Radiant City), holds immense significance in Islamic history. It is the second holiest city in Islam after Makkah and was the city to which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated in the year 622 CE, marking the start of the Islamic calendar. Madinah became the center of the Muslim community, where the first Islamic state was established.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is buried in Madinah, in Masjid Al Nabawi (The Prophet’s Mosque), one of the most important mosques in the world. The city continues to attract millions of pilgrims each year who visit the mosque and pay their respects.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and His Love for Animals
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) exemplified mercy and compassion toward all living beings, including animals. He often reminded his companions about the importance of treating animals with kindness and respect.
Abu Huraira (RA) and His Love for Cats
Abu Huraira (RA), one of the Prophet’s closest companions, is well-known for his deep love of cats. His real name was Abdur-Rahman ibn Sakhr, but he earned the nickname “Abu Huraira” (Father of Cats) because of his fondness for kittens.
He was often seen with a small kitten in his sleeve and he would feed and care for stray cats. This compassion for animals reflected the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
The Cats of Madinah
The connection between Madinah and cats is deeply symbolic. The city, renowned for its peaceful and spiritual atmosphere, continues to embrace this legacy of kindness toward animals. The Prophet’s (pbuh) teachings and Abu Huraira’s love for cats have inspired generations of Muslims to care for stray cats, particularly in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.
Many pilgrims who visit Madinah today encounter the city’s stray cats, often feeding and caring for them. The presence of cats in and around the holy sites serves as a living reminder of the Islamic emphasis on mercy and the responsibility to care for all creatures.
Our efforts through Madinah Cats Foundation honors this legacy. By rescuing and caring for the stray cats of Madinah, we are upholding the values of mercy and compassion that resonate deeply with Islamic teachings.
